ONC Evaluation Details
Each submitted Data Element has been evaluated based on the following criteria. The overall Level classification is a composite of the maturity based on these individual criteria. This information can be used to identify areas that require additional work to raise the overall classification level and consideration for inclusion in future versions of USCDI
|
Criterion #1 Maturity - Current Standards |
Level 2
- Data element is represented by a terminology standard or SDO-balloted technical specification or implementation guide.
|
Criterion #2 Maturity - Current Use
|
Level 1
- Data element is captured, stored, or accessed in at least one production EHR or HIT module.
|
Criterion #3 Maturity - Current Exchange |
Level 1
- Data element is electronically exchanged between two production EHRs or other HIT modules using available interoperability standards.
|
Criterion #4 Use Case(s) - Breadth of Applicability |
Level 2
- Use cases apply to most care settings or specialties.

CDC comments for draft USCDI v8
CDC recommends the inclusion of data element facility GPS coordinates in draft USCDI v8. National Hospital Care Survey and NAMCS both collect data from samples that represent all U.S. hospitals or ambulatory care centers, respectively. The inclusion of Facility GPS Coordinates would allow exact identification of the facility by its GPS coordinates, thereby ensuring only sampled records are included in National Hospital Care Survey and NAMCS. This data element has also been requested by other programs in the context of facility level data associated with lab tests and health care provider locations including hospitals, ambulatory providers, long term and post-acute and pharmacy providers. Location of data element in the current HCS CDA IG V1.2: Not present
Description of what CDC currently receives in production: The majority of EHR files submitted for National Hospital Care Survey include National Provider Identifier (NPI) to identify an encounter’s location. Sometimes multiple hospital locations can share a single NPI, which may lead to inclusion of non-sampled hospital records in the National Hospital Care Survey. Typically, the National Hospital Care Survey uses the NPI included in the EHR data’s Encompassing Encounter. NHCS would like to expand their hospital identification process to include Facility GPS Coordinates.
